Obituary for Leonard Smith

Leonard Dale Smith, 82 of Cerro Gordo, died at 3:10 a.m. Sunday, January 8, 2023, at St John’s Hospital in Springfield.

Funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon Thursday, January 12, 2023, at Brintlinger & Earl Funeral Home in Cerro Gordo. Visitation will be from 11:00am until 12:00 noon, also in the funeral home. Burial will take place in Cerro Gordo Cemetery with Military Honors by the Macon County Honor Guard and the Army National Guard.

Leonard was born on November 21, 1940 in Decatur, to Ellis and Maude (Albert) Smith. He married Lula “May” Hunter on June 17, 1962, in Decatur, and together they shared 60 years of marriage. He joined the Army and served his country for three years. Leonard was deployed in Germany and enjoyed his work as a mechanic. After his time in the military, he worked for Firestone as a tire builder until his retirement. He proudly served as the Chief Union Steward for United Steelworkers Union 713 while at Firestone. Leonard was an avid Cubs fan and he and his wife enjoyed bowling for many years. He was extremely proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren and enjoyed cooking out with his family. He dearly loved his dachshunds, Jimbob and Rosco.

Along with his wife May, Leonard is survived by his three daughters: Penny Farley of Cerro Gordo, Amy (Richard) Smith of Oakley, and a third daughter who chose on her own not to be a part of the family along with her son; seven grandchildren: Amanda, Erin, Tony, Ricky, Chris, Brandon, and Angel; 14+ great grandchildren; two sisters: Phyllis and Gail, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother: Leroy (Sandra) Smith, and one nephew: Danny Smith.
