Obituary for Phyllis Smothers

Phyllis Smothers, 87, of Decatur, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 12, 2023 at Springfield Memorial Hospital.

She was born August 18, 1935 in Camargo, IL, one of five daughters, to Rufus and Ruth Long. She married James Russell Smothers of Gravel Switch, KY, who preceded her in death in 1991. Phyllis loved keeping her hands busy, raising six children on a modest farm in Harristown, IL. She later worked at Taylor Pharmaceutical for 18 years but especially enjoyed making craft dolls, baskets and other handiwork for her children and friends.

Phyllis is survived by her sister, Francis Grizzle of Decatur; brother-in-law, Lester (Shirley) Elam of Decatur; daughter, Brenda (Mark Page) Bryant of Harristown, IL; son, Waverly (Maria) Smothers of Bethalto, IL; son James (Cheryl) Smothers of Tuttle, OK; son, Daryl (Lisa) Smothers of Sullivan; daughter, Carol (Robert) Carlson of Decatur; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her sisters Florence, Evelyn and Priscilla.

Graveside services will be 2:30 PM, Thursday, March 16, 2023 at Macon County Memorial Park in Harristown, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Phyllis’ honor may be made to: The Decatur and Macon County Senior Center, 1430 N 22nd St, Decatur, IL 62526.
