Obituary for Steve "Gunny" Lewis, Sr.

Stephen J. “Gunny” Lewis, Sr. 63, of Cerro Gordo, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2023 at Decatur Memorial Hospital.

Visitation will be held at 3:30 PM, Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at Cerro Gordo American Legion Post 117, 220 Wait St, Cerro Gordo, IL military honors will be rendered at 4:30 PM by the US Marines and Cerro Gordo American Legion.  A Celebration of Life will then be held at 5:30, Tuesday, at The Depot, 211 E South St., Cerro Gordo, IL. Memorials in Steve's honor may be made to The Cerro Gordo American Legion Post #117.

Steve was born October 21, 1959 in Argenta, the son of Alva and Pauline (Kramer) Lewis.  He married Debbie Wiseman, and she survives.  Steve proudly served our country in the United States Marine Corps, in the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion and stationed at: Camp Schwab, Okinawa; Air Station Miramar; and several posts in the Marine Corps Recruiting Command.

Following his military career, Steve worked as a carpenter and a farmer.  He enjoyed working with his hands and was known for his creativity in being able to build anything for anyone.  He settled for part of his life in the Fowl River area of Alabama where he was a resident river rat.  Steve enjoyed his Red, White and Blue 1979 Corvette which he entered in many parades and car shows.  He also loved his Harley Davidson motorcycles.  He was a member of the American Legion and the Masonic Lodge.

Surviving are his children: Stephen (Aubri) Lewis, Jr. of York, PA, and Holly (David) Joiner of Trussville, AL; grandchildren: Dallin, Haydn, and Madelyn; and siblings: Joseph (Linda) Lewis of Carlinville, Mark (Teresa) Lewis of Decatur, and Susan (Gary) Perkins of Carlinville.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bill Lewis.
